B Capital Group—a digital technology investment firm that focuses on innovative healthcare, technology and climate companies—was created by a Facebook founder, the head of a major hedge fund and a senior partner at BCG, the global consulting firm. After successfully raising its inaugural fund of $360 million, substantially exceeding the original target, the firm’s three founders aimed to create the premier destination for transformative growth tech, a firm capable of addressing the needs of every growth stage along a company’s journey.
Through in-depth interviews with founders of B Capital portfolio companies, we learned that the firm, while still relatively young, delivered an extremely mature value-creating experience. The foundation of this experience is the willingness of the founders and their entire team to bring their own experience as entrepreneurs to bear on every aspect of a portfolio company’s growth trajectory. Investors in people and ideas, rather than just solutions, B Capital partners have a unique ability to understand what drives entrepreneurs … and how to harness and support this drive to build outstanding companies. A comprehensive competitive landscape analysis revealed that most firms position around their founders, while few focus on their ideas—a significant opportunity for B Capital to stand out. In conversations with B Capital’s partners, we discovered that their vision for the firm was strikingly cohesive, a combination of commercial ambition and altruism; they truly want to make a positive difference in the companies they own … and on the world.
B Capital’s new brand drives home the idea that it is a firm of founders helping founders build unforgettable businesses, reflecting the entrepreneurial backgrounds of many of its leaders. “Built by founders for founders, B Capital connects entrepreneurs around the world with the people and resources they need to achieve their boldest visions.” The brand suggests a like-minded community of entrepreneurs committed to building businesses and social good.
The relationship with BCG, a founding partner at the start of B Capital, was reframed as a strategic partnership that offers portfolio companies access to a vast network of global thought leaders, strengthening the “connections” idea implied in the brand. At the same time, to emphasize that B Capital is fully independent, the word “Group” was dropped from the firm’s name.
The new brand resonated powerfully with entrepreneurs and investors alike. Shortly after the brand’s launch, B Capital closed its second fund, this one totaling $750 million, more than doubling the size of its predecessor. Today, B Capital has investments in more than 160 early-to-late-stage companies, with over $7 billion in assets under management.
